Who Are we

Solidarity Youth for Inspiration (SYI) was founded in 2023, in Kakuma Refugee Camp, Kenya, with a vision to empower youth and individuals through education, entrepreneurship, and psychosocial support. Recognizing the challenges faced by both refugee and host communities, SYI was established as a community-driven organization dedicated to fostering self-reliance and resilience.

Kakuma Refugee Camp has long been a place of refuge for displaced individuals from various countries, but it also presents significant challenges—limited access to education, economic opportunities, and mental health support. SYI emerged as a response to these needs, aiming to equip young people with the tools to build sustainable futures.

Our Approach to Community Development

SYI believes in a holistic approach to community development, ensuring that individuals receive comprehensive support in multiple areas:

  1. Educational Empowerment

Education is the foundation of self-reliance. SYI provides learning opportunities beyond traditional schooling, including vocational training, mentorship programs, and digital literacy initiatives. By equipping youth with knowledge and practical skills, SYI enables them to pursue careers and contribute meaningfully to their communities.

  1. Economic Independence

Entrepreneurship and financial literacy are key to breaking cycles of dependency. SYI offers skill-building workshops, startup guidance, and access to resources that help individuals create sustainable livelihoods. By supporting micro-enterprises and small businesses, SYI fosters economic independence among refugees and host communities.

  1. Mental Health and Well-being

Psychosocial support is essential for individuals facing displacement and social integration challenges. SYI provides mental health programs, counselling services, and safe spaces for dialogue, ensuring that emotional and psychological well-being is prioritized. Community-led initiatives encourage trauma recovery and resilience-building.

  1. Gender Equality and Inclusion

SYI actively promotes gender equity and inclusion, ensuring that women, girls, and marginalized groups have equal opportunities. Programs focus on leadership training, awareness campaigns, and advocacy, fostering an environment where everyone has a voice in shaping their future.

At Solidarity Youth for Inspiration (SYI), our mission is to empower, educate, and elevate youth and individuals—especially those in vulnerable and displaced communities—by offering access to quality education, digital and entrepreneurial skills, psychosocial support, and livelihood opportunities.
